Why shade grown cocoa?
C ocoa is a shade
loving plant. In its natural habitat it grows under the
canopy of the rainforest. So it is grown by many farmers
in Talamanca region in Costa Rica. While cocoa occupies
the lower story of farms, the overstory consists of fruit
trees, timber species or natural rainforest. Growing cocoa
in this way helps to protect the rainforest from logging
and it provides a habitat for a wide range of wildlife species,
especially for birds. Cocoa farms serve as buffer zones
around natural forest reserves and as wildlife corridors.
Diverse trees on cocoa farms protect the soil from erosion
and they also cool local climate. That is why we call our
chocolate "Rainforest Friendly". more...
